Understand the "why" with WSET Level 3
This 5+ day advanced-level qualification builds on Level 2 knowledge to understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’ wines are made and taste the way they do. Students must be able to explain “why” by linking facts and explaining them in order to pass Level 3.
At least 55 hours of home study is required to pass the WSET Level 3 exam
What you will learn:
- How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).
- Gain a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world.
- Accurately describe the key characteristics of the principal still wines of the world and use the description to make an assessment of quality and readiness for drinking.
- Develop the skills to explain why certain grapes are grown in different places and what the winemaker has done to achieve a certain style.
The Exam
Level 3 is examined by a ‘closed book’ exam in two parts: Theory and Tasting. The pass mark for each Unit is 55%. Students must pass each Unit independently (55% on each paper).
Unit 1: Theory Examination (2 hours)
The closed-book theory exam is made up of two parts: (i) 50 multiple choice questions; and (ii) 4 short-answer essay questions worth 25 marks each.
Unit 2: Tasting Examination (30 minutes)
Students are required to assess two wines blind.
You will receive a grade for each Unit, with your final grade being the average of the two Units.
Results are graded as follows:
- 80% or higher (with no paper being below 65%) – Pass with Distinction
- 65% – 79% – Pass with Merit
- 55% – 64% – Pass
- 45% – 54% – Fail
- 44% or below – Fail Unclassified
