Start your wine journey

This one-day qualification is suited for novice wine enthusiasts or those starting a career in hospitality. You will be introduced to the key stages in grape growing and winemaking, major grapes and wine styles, food and wine pairing and the storage and service of wine. We will taste 14 wines and pair them with common food components such as sugar, salt, acid and chili heat to examine the impact they have on wine.   

What you will learn

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • The key stages in grape growing and winemaking
  • Characteristics of wines made from popular grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah/Shiraz
  • Key principles and practices involved in the storage and service of wine

The Exam

Level 1 is examined by 30 multiple choice questions to be completed ‘closed-book’ in 45-minutes. The pass mark is 70% and the exam takes place at the end of the final session.

You will receive a globally recognized certificate from the Wine Spirit Education Trust (WSET) upon successful completion of the exam.

The course runs from 9:30 to approximately 17h. There will be an hour lunch-break and some study time before the exam (which will start around 16h).

Students must be of legal drinking age (16 in Luxembourg. There are no other entry requirements for Level 1.

Registrations will close 3 days before the course date, or earlier if the class is full. 

  • Students must attend the course to be eligible to sit the exam. WSET does not authorize any candidate to attend an exam without attending the course. 
  • At the start of the exam, all candidates must show the invigilator phot ID as proof of identity.
  • The exam is ‘closed book’. Candidates must follow WSET’s examinations conduct including no cheating during the exam. Failure to adhere to WSET’s exam conduct requirements could render your exam invalid. 

WSET has 6 weeks to grade exams from the date they receive the papers in London. We will inform you by email when WSET sends us the grade list. Certificates and pins will follow in the post for successful candidates (can take up to 10 weeks from the exam date). 

If you fail your exam, you can pay to re-take the test. Please contact WSET@bernard-massard,lu for details of the fee and dates of future exams. 

You can transfer to another class date for a small admin fee (€25) up to 10 business days before the class start-date. For Level 1 only, cancellations/changes up to 3 business days before the class date can be accommodated for a fee of €65. Last-minute changes (within 3 business days of the course) are not possible as we will have incurred fees with WSET for your place and cannot register another student in your place.

Currently we are offering classes in English and French. However, WSET materials are available in many languages. If you are interested in other language options please email WSET@bernard-massard.lu.

Go global with WSET Level 2

Learn about 30 major grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe wines of the world with confidence!

What you will learn:

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio/Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz
  • The style and quality of wines made from 22 other major grape varieties that are produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world including Gamay, Grenache, Tempranillo and Nebbiolo
  • Key styles of Sparkling & Fortified wines, and their grapes and winemaking methods
  • Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality
  • Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine

The Exam

Level 2 is examined by 50 multiple choice questions to be completed ‘closed-book’ in 60-minutes. The pass mark is 55% and the exam takes place at the end of the final session.

You will receive a globally recognized certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) upon successful completion of the exam. 

Results are graded as follows:

  • 85% or higher – Pass with Distinction
  • 70% – 84% – Pass with Merit
  • 55% – 69% – Pass

Level 2 consists in 8 2-hour modules followed by a 1-hour exam. 

Students must be of legal drinking age (16 in Luxembourg). There are no other entry requirements for Level 2, however Level 1 is recommended for those with limited knowledge of wine. 

Registrations will close 12 business days before the course date as required by WSET exam registration deadlines, or earlier if the class is full. 

  • Students must attend the course to be eligible to sit the exam. WSET does not authorize any candidate to attend an exam without attending the course. 
  • At the start of the exam, all candidates must show the invigilator photo ID as proof of identity.
  • The exam is ‘closed book’. Candidates must follow WSET’s examinations conduct including no cheating during the exam. Failure to adhere to WSET’s exam conduct requirements could render your exam invalid.

Understand the "why" with WSET Level 3

This 5+ day advanced-level qualification builds on Level 2 knowledge to understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’ wines are made and taste the way they do. Students must be able to explain “why” by linking facts and explaining them in order to pass Level 3. 

At least 55 hours of home study is required to pass the WSET Level 3 exam

What you will learn:

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world. 
  • Accurately describe the key characteristics of the principal still wines of the world and use the description to make an assessment of quality and readiness for drinking. 
  • Develop the skills to explain why certain grapes are grown in different places and what the winemaker has done to achieve a certain style.

The Exam

Level 3 is examined by a ‘closed book’ exam in two parts: Theory and Tasting. The pass mark for each Unit is 55%. Students must pass each Unit independently (55% on each paper).

Unit 1: Theory Examination (2 hours)

The closed-book theory exam is made up of two parts: (i) 50 multiple choice questions; and (ii) 4 short-answer essay questions worth 25 marks each. 

Unit 2: Tasting Examination (30 minutes)

Students are required to assess two wines blind.

You will receive a grade for each Unit, with your final grade being the average of the two Units.

Results are graded as follows:

  • 80% or higher (with no paper being below 65%) – Pass with Distinction
  • 65% – 79% – Pass with Merit
  • 55% – 64% – Pass
  • 45% – 54% – Fail
  • 44% or below – Fail Unclassified
You will receive a globally recognized certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) upon successful completion of the exam.
