Turn your curiosity for spirits into expertise

The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits is an internationally recognised introductory course designed to give you a solid and practical understanding of the main spirit categories. Aimed at hospitality professionals, bartenders, retail staff and motivated beginners, it covers the essentials: how spirits are produced, what distinguishes each style, and how to describe them using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits®. 

What you will learn

  • The basic principles of spirit production 
  • The main types and styles of spirits (such as whisky, rum, vodka, gin, tequila, and brandy—linking each style to its raw materials and production methods)
  • How to serve spirits
  • Factors affecting the flavour of spirits (proper storage, recommended glassware and bar tools)
  • How to describe spirits using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT)

The Exam

Level 1 in Spirits is examined by 30 multiple choice questions to be completed ‘closed-book’ in 45-minutes. The pass mark is 70% and the exam takes place at the end of the final session.

You will receive a globally recognized digital certificate from the Wine Spirit Education Trust (WSET) upon successful completion of the exam.

The course runs from 9:30 to approximately 17:00. There will be an hour lunch-break and some study time before the exam (which will start around 16:00).

Students must be of legal drinking age (16 in Luxembourg). There are no other entry requirements for Level 1.

Registrations will close 3 days before the course date, or earlier if the class is full. 

  • Students must attend the course to be eligible to sit the exam. WSET does not authorize any candidate to attend an exam without attending the course. 
  • At the start of the exam, all candidates must show the invigilator phot ID as proof of identity.
  • The exam is ‘closed book’. Candidates must follow WSET’s examinations conduct including no cheating during the exam. Failure to adhere to WSET’s exam conduct requirements could render your exam invalid. 

WSET has 15 working days to grade exams from the date they receive the papers in London.

We will inform you by email when WSET sends us the grade list.

Successful candidates will receive a digital certificate.

If you fail your exam, you can pay to re-take the test. Please contact WSET@bernard-massard.lu for details of the fee and dates of future exams. 

You can transfer to another class date for a small admin fee (€25) up to 10 business days before the class start-date. For Level 1 only, cancellations/changes up to 3 business days before the class date can be accommodated for a fee of €65. Last-minute changes (within 3 business days of the course) are not possible as we will have incurred fees with WSET for your place and cannot register another student in your place.

Currently we are offering classes in English and French. However, WSET materials are available in many languages. If you are interested in other language options please email WSET@bernard-massard.lu.

The WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits gives you a complete understanding of spirits and their world. You will learn how each spirit is made, how to identify its characteristics, and how to evaluate it with precision. This course teaches you to taste, describe, and compare spirits with confidence, whether you work in the industry or are a passionate enthusiast looking to deepen your knowledge.

  • Influence of production methods on the characteristics of spirits and liqueurs
  • Characteristics of major spirits and liqueurs worldwide
  • Learning the basics of cocktails and their main categories
  • Assessment of a spirit using the WSET® Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits (Level 2)

The Exam

The WSET Level 2 assessment is conducted via a closed-book written exam, consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes. To pass, a minimum score of 55% is required.

In terms of preparation, the course includes a total of 26 hours of estimated study time: 15 hours of guided learning (including 1 hour for the exam) and approximately 11 hours of independent study.

Upon passing the exam, you will receive a globally recognized digital certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET).
