Start your wine journey

This one-day qualification is suited for novice wine enthusiasts or those starting a career in hospitality. You will be introduced to the key stages in grape growing and winemaking, major grapes and wine styles, food and wine pairing and the storage and service of wine. We will taste 14 wines and pair them with common food components such as sugar, salt, acid and chili heat to examine the impact they have on wine.

What you will learn

  • How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • The key stages in grape growing and winemaking
  • Characteristics of wines made from popular grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah/Shiraz
  • Key principles and practices involved in the storage and service of wine

The Exam

Level 1 is examined by 30 multiple choice questions to be completed ‘closed-book’ in 45-minutes. The pass mark is 70% and the exam takes place at the end of the final session.

You will receive a globally recognized certificate from the Wine Spirit Education Trust (WSET) upon successful completion of the exam.
